The Catholic Church in the United States is comprised of 195 dioceses, designated by region and each led by a bishop chosen by the Holy Father. Currently there are 183 dioceses with bishops currently leading them (others are vacant or have an apostolic administrator as the head).
Thomas Peters, the American Papist, is keeping a running list of those bishops who have issued public statements in opposition to the recent HHS mandate requiring contraception and abortifacient coverage in all heath plans, save a few which fall into an extremely narrow exemption.
It is best, in my opinion, to keep the list current at one site. Thomas has done a great job with this.
As of today, 169 of the US bishops leading a diocese have issued statements. That’s more than 90% who have spoken out against the Obama administration’s attack on religious liberty.
Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!
It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down upon the beard, upon the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes!
It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion!
For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life for evermore. (Psalm 133)
Life for evermore. The blessing, indeed.
